FAQ
Which speakers are compatible with this amplifier?
The SA1 MK2 is designed to power passive speakers and is fully compatible with the entire FORUS speaker range.
It is also compatible with many passive speakers from other manufacturers, provided they match the amplifier's specifications.
The SA1 MK2 is an excellent choice for compact and medium-sized stereo systems, offering a versatile combination of power, connectivity, and value. If you are unsure whether your speakers are compatible, feel free to contact our support team at support@argonaudio.com.
Can I connect a turntable directly to this amplifier?
Yes. SA1 MK2 features both a dedicated PHONO input and a standard LINE IN input, making it compatible with virtually any turntable - no additional equipment required.
Choose the correct input depending on your turntable:
- Turntable without a built-in phono preamplifier (RIAA) → Connect it directly to the PHONO input.
- Turntable with a built-in phono preamplifier (RIAA) → Set the turntable to RIAA ON (or LINE) and connect it to the LINE IN input.
Recommended settings for Argon Audio turntables
TT-3 and TT SIGNATURE → Connect to the PHONO input.
TT MK2 → For the best sound quality, we recommend setting the turntable to RIAA OFF and connecting it to the PHONO input, allowing the SA1 MK2 built-in phono stage to handle the amplification.
TT-3 Plus, TT-4 MK2, TT-4 Special Edition, and TT AURORA → We recommend setting the turntable to RIAA ON and connecting it to the LINE IN input. The built-in phono preamplifier in these models has been carefully matched to the supplied cartridge for excellent sound quality and the simplest setup.
This flexibility makes SA1 MK2 compatible with virtually any turntable, whether it has a built-in phono preamplifier or not.
Can I use this amplifier with my TV?
Yes. SA1 MK2 can be connected to your TV using HDMI ARC or optical (TOSLINK), allowing you to enjoy high-quality TV audio through your speakers.
For the best experience, we recommend using HDMI ARC. The amplifier will automatically turn on and off with your TV, and you can control the volume using your TV remote—giving you the same everyday convenience as a soundbar, combined with the superior sound quality of a dedicated hi-fi system.
If your TV doesn't support HDMI ARC, you can also connect it using the optical (TOSLINK) input.
To ensure proper audio playback, set your TV's digital audio output to PCM (Stereo). The SA1 MK2 is designed for two-channel audio and does not support Dolby Digital, DTS, or other surround sound formats. If your TV is set to output one of these formats, you may experience no sound or other audio issues.Setting your TV to PCM (Stereo) ensures that the audio signal is converted into a compatible two-channel format that the amplifier can process correctly.
Does this amplifier support Bluetooth streaming?
Yes. The SA1 MK2 features Bluetooth 5.0 and supports the aptX, aptX HD, and AAC codecs.
This allows for high-quality wireless audio streaming from compatible devices, with aptX HD offering improved audio quality compared to standard Bluetooth codecs when supported by the source device.
Can I connect a subwoofer to this amplifier?
Yes. The SA1 MK2 features a PRE OUT connection that can be used to connect an active subwoofer.
Adding a subwoofer can extend the system's low-frequency performance and is particularly beneficial when paired with smaller speakers or when additional bass output is desired for movies and music.
For the easiest setup, we recommend the Argon Audio Subwoofer Connect Kit:
This kit includes the cables needed to connect the amplifier and subwoofer quickly and easily.
What is the difference between a stereo amplifier and an AV receiver?
The main difference is the number of channels they support and their intended use.
A stereo amplifier is designed for two-channel audio (left and right speakers) and is primarily focused on music listening. Examples include the Argon Audio SA1 MK2 and SA2. Both also work very well with TVs thanks to their HDMI ARC and optical inputs, making them a great choice for high-quality TV and music audio with a simple stereo setup.
An AV receiver is designed for multi-channel audio, making it suitable for home cinema systems such as 5.1, 7.1, or Dolby Atmos setups. It can power multiple speakers and process surround sound formats for a more immersive movie experience.
In short:
- Choose a stereo amplifier for music and high-quality TV audio with two speakers.
- Choose an AV receiver for surround sound and home cinema systems with 5.1 channels or more.
Do I need an amplifier to use these speakers?
Yes. The FORUS 4 speakers are passive speakers, which means they do not have a built-in amplifier. Unlike active speakers, passive speakers require external amplification to produce sound.
To use the FORUS 4 speakers, you will need to connect them to an external amplifier with speaker cables. Once connected, you can then connect your music sources, such as a turntable, streamer, TV, or CD player, to the amplifier.
Which Argon Audio amplifier should I choose for these speakers?
The FORUS 4 is compatible with any Argon Audio stereo amplifier (SA1 MK2 or SA2) designed to drive passive speakers. The best choice depends on your preferred features, listening habits, and the sources you plan to connect.
When choosing an amplifier, consider whether you need:
- Bluetooth for wireless music streaming
- HDMI ARC for TV audio
- A phono input for a turntable
- Digital inputs for devices such as streamers, TVs, or CD players
FORUS 4 is easy to drive and works well with a wide range of amplifiers, making it easy to build a system that matches your needs and budget.
What speaker cable should I use?
Any good-quality speaker cable will work well with any FORUS speakers. As a general guide:
Cables should be kept as sort as possible and of a smiliar lenght to each speaker.
BASIC 1 is already a perfectly good choice. If you're building a more ambitious system or want a premium cable, PRIME 1 is the natural upgrade. CLASSIC 1 is primarily about its thicker conductor, making it the better option for longer runs rather than a guaranteed sound quality upgrade.
How much amplifier power do these speakers require?
We intentionally avoid specifying the wattage of our speakers. The reason is that wattage doesn't provide a clear indication of compatibility with a specific amplifier. This is due to variations in how wattage is measured across different brands.
Moreover, even accurate wattage specifications don't necessarily reflect the quality of sound or the volume level of the speakers.
However, we do have specific recommendations: for the FORUS 4, amplifiers within the 30-80 W range are ideal. Our SA1 MK2 and SA2 amplifiers are matched to comfortably drive the FORUS range.
More power generally means more headroom and control, not just more volume, so it's rarely a problem to have some extra in reserve. For exact power handling and impedance figures for your specific model, check the product page or manual.
Can I connect a turntable directly to these speakers?
No. FORUS 4 is a passive speaker and does not have a built-in amplifier, so a turntable cannot be connected directly to it.
Unlike our active speaker series (FENRIS, FORTE, and STUDIE 3) and our stereo amplifiers (SA1 MK2 and SA2), FORUS 4 does not feature RCA inputs, PHONO inputs, or any other source connections.
To use a turntable with FORUS 4, you will need a stereo amplifier or AV receiver between the turntable and the speakers. If your turntable does not have a built-in phono preamp (RIAA), you will also need either an amplifier with a PHONO input or an external phono preamp.
Can I use these speakers for home cinema (5.1 or more)?
Yes. FORUS 4 speakers can be used as part of a home cinema system, including 5.1, 7.1, and larger surround sound setups.
They are ideal as front, surround, or rear speakers in a multi-channel system. To use them for home cinema, you will need a compatible AV receiver (home cinema amplifier) to power the speakers and process surround sound formats.
What is the difference between bookshelf and floorstanding speakers?
The main difference is size, bass performance, and output capability.
Bookshelf speakers are more compact and use a single woofer and tweeter. They are easier to place on furniture, stands, or shelves and are often a great choice for smaller to medium-sized rooms. While they deliver excellent sound quality, many listeners choose to pair them with a subwoofer for deeper bass.
Floorstanding speakers are larger and typically feature two woofers and a tweeter. The additional driver area and larger cabinet allow them to produce deeper bass, higher output levels, and a bigger, more effortless sound. They are often the preferred choice for larger rooms and listeners who want strong bass performance without adding a subwoofer.
Both speaker types can deliver outstanding sound quality. The best choice depends on your room size, available space, and listening preferences.
What is the difference between active and passive speakers?
The main difference is that active speakers have a built-in amplifier, while passive speakers require an external amplifier to power them.
At Argon Audio, our FENRIS, FORTE, and STUDIE 3 series are active speakers. They combine the amplifier, drivers, crossover, and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) into a single, carefully tuned system. Because every component is designed to work together, the amplifier is perfectly matched to the drivers, resulting in optimized performance, excellent sound quality, and a simple plug-and-play setup.
Active speakers can be connected directly to sources such as TVs, turntables, smartphones, computers, streamers, and CD players, eliminating the need for a separate amplifier and reducing both clutter and setup time.
Our FORUS series consists of passive speakers. These speakers require an external amplifier or AV receiver to provide power and manage audio sources. This approach offers greater flexibility, allowing you to choose, upgrade, or replace your amplifier independently as your system evolves.
For stereo music systems, FORUS speakers pair perfectly with stereo amplifiers such as the SA1 MK2 or SA2. If you're planning to build a home cinema system with surround sound (5.1, 7.1, or more), you'll need a compatible AV receiver instead of a stereo amplifier.
Which should you choose?
If you're looking for the simplest, smartest all-in-one solution with exceptional sound quality and minimal setup, active speakers are the ideal choice. If you prefer maximum flexibility, enjoy upgrading individual components, or plan to build a surround sound home cinema system, passive speakers may be the better fit.
How far should the speakers be placed from the wall?
As a starting point, we recommend placing FORUS 4 speakers 10–30 cm (4–12 inches) from the rear wall. This usually provides a good balance between bass performance, soundstage, and clarity.
Placing the speakers closer to the wall will increase bass output, while moving them further into the room can improve imaging and reduce bass coloration.
Small adjustments can make a noticeable difference, so feel free to experiment with positioning to find the sound that works best in your room.
Can I add a subwoofer to my setup?
Yes, but not directly to the speakers themselves. Since FORUS 4 is a passive speaker, the subwoofer must be connected to the amplifier or AV receiver powering the system.
Adding a subwoofer is often highly beneficial with FORUS 4, as it allows the system to reproduce deeper bass frequencies that the speakers cannot reach on their own. This results in a fuller sound for both music, movies, and gaming.
